Frequently Asked Questions

MISSION STATEMENT

Dead End Street® is an integrated publishing and motion picture production company. Founded in 1997, the company focuses on “edutainment” – i.e., products that educate and entertain.

WHY SUCH AN UNUSUAL NAME?

Our world is filled with dead end streets. But most of us avoid them. By doing so, we pass up the untapped knowledge that is hidden there. Lessons to be learned, stories to be told, pains to be shared, loves to be rekindled – these all exist on the world’s dead end streets. We liberate this whizdom and share it with you.

HOW CAN I ORDER BOOKS?

We will not ship a review copy to any residence; it must be mailed in care of your newspaper, periodical, journal or station. A review copy may be ordered through this online form or by snail mail.

MAY I USE AN EXCEPT FROM A DEAD END STREET® BOOK OR ARTWORK OR DESIGN FROM A DEAD END STREET® BOOK COVER?

Permission requests should be directed to John P. Rutledge through this online form or by snail mail.

HOW CAN I SUBMIT MY MANUSCRIPT?

Because we often receive dozens of screenplays and book manuscripts (fiction and non-fiction) each day, we require that each submission satisfy three basic criteria. First, your manuscript and/or screenplay must be completed. We will not consider works in-progress. Second, the work must have been vigorously edited and proofread. Third and last, submit a 500-word synopsis through this online form. That’s all there is to it. If your synopsis piques our interest, we’ll contact you to solicit the entire manuscript. If you have not heard from us within 30 days, it is because we are unable to pursue your project. In such situations, we thank you for your interest and wish you the best of luck in your literary and/or cinematic pursuits.

NOTE: At this time, we are particularly interested in screenplays for features and shorts.

DO I LOSE THE COPYRIGHT?

No. Unlike many of our competitors, Dead End Street® does not require transfer of copyright. Rather, our authors grant us an exclusive license to the work. An exclusive license essentially provides that the author cannot produce or distribute copies of the work herself. All copies (other than the author’s complimentary and/or promotional copies) must be distributed by and through Dead End Street®. This exclusive license allows us to gauge demand for the work. It also increases our chance to recoup the money we spend to edit, produce, promote and distribute the work.

HOW DO I CONTACT DEAD END STREET®?
